Addictions and addictive personalities

T
oday, addiction is not just about drugs use or substance abuse. It can pertain to sex, lust, work, video games, computers, food… It is the mother’s milk that prevents feelings of abandonment like those of an infant when his mother is away from him. Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, more recently, Amy Winehouse, and many creative geniuses for whom rehab fails, use their addictions in this way. Because of their fame, celebrities often turn to individual or private therapy, when really group therapy would instantly show them their identity problems through the way they communicate outside of a social setting..

People with an addictive personality have the body of an adult, sometimes the intelligence of a genius, but nevertheless experience the emotions from their early childhood.

A collapse in the childhood environment? A physiological problem that renders the baby unable to tolerate frustration and prevents him from developing trust in himself and fulfillment in his affective life

Whatever the cause(s), addiction is a “tool" that prevents sinking into chaos. People with addictive personalities have the body of an adult, but continue to experience the emotions from their early childhood without being able to manage them. This might not be readily apparent in their social behavior because they know how to act as if “everything’s okay”. But, when their emotions are involved, they feel overwhelmed by them, and turn to addiction to feel like they are on solid ground.
